JOIN DERMATOLOGY ASSOCIATES OF COLORADO IN THE WALK TO CURE PSORIASIS!
ABOUT PSORIASIS:
Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune disease that appears on the skin. It occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. Psoriasis is not contagious. People affected by psoriasis are at an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease, Crohn’s disease and other inflammatory diseases. People with psoriasis often face discrimination and embarrassment because others mistakenly fear the condition is contagious. As many as 7.5 million Americans have psoriasis for which there is no cure.
There are five common types of psoriases, but the most common form is called plaque psoriasis. Family history is very important. If you have a family member with psoriasis, you have a 10% chance of developing psoriasis.
The typical symptoms of psoriasis are red, itchy patches or spots, raised bumps, or silvery scales. Up to 30% of people who have psoriases develop psoriatic arthritis.
Although there are many advances in the treatment of psoriasis, to date there is no cure. Please join Dermatology Associates of Colorado (DAC) in the local psoriasis walk to help find a cure for psoriasis on August 29, 2010 at 9:00am at Washington Park. You may go to walk.psoriasis.org to learn more about the walk.
ABOUT THE NATIONAL PSORIASIS FOUNDATION: (NPF)
The National Psoriasis Foundation’s mission is to find a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and eliminate their devastating effects through research, advocacy and education. Since 1968, the Psoriasis Foundation has made a significant difference in the lives of millions of Americans affected by psoriatic diseases. The NPF is the nation’s leading charitable funder of psoriatic disease research and they advocate for improved patient access to care. T he foundation provides information and support to those affected by these diseases and their families, and promote greater public understanding of psoriatic disease.
AOUT WALK TO CURE PSORIASIS:
Walk to Cure Psoriasis are family-friendly, non-competitive 1K or 5K walks currently held in more that 20 cities across the country. Since its inception in 2007, Walk to Cure Psoriasis has attracted more than 10,000 walkers and volunteers, and has raised more than $3 million for foundation research, education and advocacy programs. As public understanding of psoriasis continues to build; Walk to Cure Psoriasis is empowering people with the disease to speak out. When companies participate in the Walk to Cure Psoriasis, they join other corporate champions in the growing movement to find a cure for this disease.
Last year the Denver Walk to Cure Psoriasis raised over $30,000 dollars for the cause. DAC’s team raised the most money as team sponsors and Dr. Capin raised the most money personally. This year Dr. Capin is co-chair of the walk along with Sarah Kurtz P.A.-C. Dr. DeVito, a partner of DAC, is in charge of this years walk team representing DAC. To date Dr. DeVito’s team has raised the largest amount of money and has the largest number of people walking.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED?
Go the walk.psoriasis.org and look for the Denver Walk. You may start your own team or join DAC’s team. We would be honored to have you join our team. The walk is free. Registration begins at 8:00am at Washington Park on August 29, 2010. The 1K and 5K walks will begin at 9:00am. Kirk Montgomery will be the emcee of the event. Kirk is from channel 9 news and is a wonderful emcee and will offer a great time and entertainment for our cause. There will be live music, food, educational booths and you will have the opportunity to support a wonderful cause and mingle with other patients that may have psoriasis. This will offer you the opportunity to learn about new treatments for psoriasis and know what your options are if you or a loved one has psoriasis. This is also a great way to give something back to the cause and our community.
I am looking forward to seeing you at the Walk to Cure Psoriasis!
Sincerely,
Leslie Capin MD, Medical Director of Dermatology Associated of Colorado
